Tell us about yourself
My name is April. I am a mother of 7 (4 boys and 3 girls) and a wife. I was born in Pittsburgh, PA but raised in Johnstown, PA. I am a sports mom and recently became a small business owner so my life is constantly busy. In my spare time I love to shop , organize my house, craft, and educate myself.
What drew you to the CHW position in the first place? Do you have any past experiences that have helped and/or prepared you for this role?
Ever since I can remember I have always had a passion to help people, whether it be lending a listening ear, giving advice, helping someone achieve a goal, or just making my presence known. My role at The Women’s Help Center has prepared me for the CHW role. Being an employee at the Center I was able to help particular clients, but switching over to the role of a CHW allows me to help out clients in the community.
What does being a Community Health Worker mean to you?
Being a Community Health Worker means that I can help people in the community achieve a healthier, stable lifestyle. We are the support system that someone may need. There are a bunch of resources available in our area that most people are not aware of, so being a CHW allows me to show them what’s available.
What are some specific examples of things you’ve been able to accomplish with your participants so far?
A participant recently became a full-time parent, who wasn’t prepared. I helped the family move to a new apartment. I also helped with baby and home necessities, a WIC appointment, and baby documentations.
